TJ Transport provided haulage services to assist in the resurfacing of the A264 in Horsham, which is part of a £6.3m project to improve a number of roads in the county.
These roadworks were undertaken by West Sussex Highways on behalf of West Sussex County Council. Tarmac was brought in to help undertake the work and they in turn awarded the haulage contract to TJ.
TJ was employed to transport asphalt road planings from the resurfacing site to Tarmac’s local hub in the Horsham area. From there, the used asphalt was taken to Tarmac’s Hayes Asphalt Plant on the outskirts of London for recycling and reuse as new asphalt on this project.
Using our fleet of 8-wheel tippers, we deployed between 5 and 8 vehicles per night between March and May this year to move the materials, which totalled around 20,000 tonnes.
The resurfacing work itself took place between 8 and 15 August, with a diversion put in place through the town centre.
All this work took place overnight, enabling TJ’s fleet to be utilised around the clock. Night work is advantageous in this type of project as night time road closures impact fewer people and it also meant that the journey time between Hampshire and Hayes was greatly reduced due to the low volume of traffic on the roads overnight.
TJ’s Out of Hours Manager, Kevin Longland said: “Our involvement in the project went smoothly from start to finish, spanning three months. We deployed between 5 and 8 tipper trucks per night, transporting around 20,000 tonnes of used asphalt in total. The fact that the used asphalt road planings were taken away, recycled and returned to the site for reuse is great and completely in-line with TJ’s circular process values.”
