WHAT IS GRAVEL USED FOR?

Construction and infrastructure
Gravel is commonly used as a key component in the construction of roads, driveways, pathways and car parks. It provides a stable base, improves drainage and enhances durability.

Landscaping and gardening
Gravel can be used in landscaping projects to create attractive pathways, garden borders and decorative features. It is also used in the construction of retaining walls and for drainage purposes in gardens and landscapes.

Foundation and drainage systems
Gravel is often used as a base material for foundations of buildings, sheds and other structures. It helps in distributing weight, improving stability and preventing moisture accumulation. Gravel is also used in drainage systems to facilitate water runoff.

Aggregate for concrete
Gravel is a primary component of concrete. It is mixed with cement, sand and water to create this strong and durable building material, which is used widely within construction projects.

Filtration and drainage

TYPES OF GRAVEL WE SUPPLY

4/10mm gravel
4/10mm single size gravel is a primary multi-purpose aggregate, primarily sourced from sea dredging in the Southern Region, though quarried gravel is also available. It is most commonly used for surfacing driveways and paths, but also serves as a drainage material for construction projects. Cost from £32.50 per tonne.

10/20mm gravel
10/20mm single size gravel is a primary multi-purpose aggregate, primarily sourced from sea dredging in the Southern Region, though quarried gravel is also available. It is usually used for driveways and paths, but can also serve as a drainage material for construction projects. Cost from £32.50 per tonne.

20/40mm gravel
20/40mm single size gravel is a primary aggregate, primarily sourced from sea dredging in the Southern Region, though quarried gravel is also available. It is most commonly used for backfill and drainage for construction projects and it is compliant to Type B specification. You can collect small quantities of this gravel from our Butser Quarry near Petersfield. Cost from £32.50 per tonne.

Gravel rejects
Gravel reject is a primary aggregate, primarily sourced from sea dredging in the Southern Region, though quarried gravel is also available. It is an oversize product that can contain stones up to 150mm. It is commonly used for backfill and drainage for construction projects. Cost from £32.50 per tonne. 

HYTHE QUARRY

We can also source gravel from our Hythe Quarry. The quarry produces two products – a light, soft sand and a well-graded gravel. The golden gravel and sharp sand mixture, which is sometimes referred to as ballast, is ideal for onward screening/washing, bedding and drainage fill.

Hythe Quarry was identified in the Hampshire Minerals and Waste Plan (2013) as ‘the best option for continuing a local supply of soft sand and sharp sand and gravel from this part of south Hampshire’.

Planning permission for mineral extraction and restoration was granted in March 2017 and quarrying commenced in August 2018. The quarry is split into three phases and is planned to be completed by 2028.
